I've been a fan of the Lucky books from the beginning, and have read them all. On the contrary, I quit reading the Housewife Assassin in the first book. However, when Deborah Coonts expressed her enthusiasm for this collaboration, I thought perhaps I'd been hasty in my rejection, so I decided I'd give it a try. I'm always happy to read another Lucky adventure.My objection to the Housewife Assassin character is summarized in this book by this quote from Lucky herself: "But still, something about being judge and jury bothered me. Not my universe, I guess. ... I knew their shades of gray would not be a comfortable place for this black and white gal." I simply don't feel comfortable accepting the premise of a "black ops" character as a heroine. I am better able to accept a James Bond, for example, with no pretense of a normal everyday housewife and mother who rationalizes gross illegality as if the established structures of even covert intelligence operations are sacrificed at the whim of a supposedly "elite" band of criminals.The book, however, is enjoyable, although I skimmed parts of the Donna side of the narrative to return to the more likeable characters of the Lucky story. I'm sure that readers who, unlike me, are not uptight about the premise of the Housewife Assassin will be entertained.
