I just finished planning our spring vacation drive along Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway This book was an excellent planning tool and the only guide you really need. The book follows the roadway from North to south beginning at Front Royal, Va and ending at the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. The book divides the road into several segments and includes maps of each. The first "The Shenandoah Valley" give information about visiting surrounding areas including Washington D.C. It then gives a good description of the town of Front Royal, the northern entry point to Skyline Drive and Shenandoah National Park. You can begin your drive at any point along Skyline Drive or the Parkway. You only have to find your entry point in the guide and begin following along.The road has mile markers along its entire length and the book uses those mile posts as a guide as it describes each point of interest along the road. This makes it easy to not only know exactly where a point of interest is located -- i..e. Apple Orchard Mountain (MP 76.5) -- but also allows you to easily calculate the distant between one point of interest and another.Along the route, each point of interest is described including visitors centers, overlooks, campgrounds, waterfalls, places to eat, etc. There are entries for hiking trails which give you the length of the trail, the amount of time needed to complete the hike, elevation gain, the location of the trailhead, and whether it is an easy, moderate or strenuous hike as well as a short description of what you will see. If you are a serious hiker you may want a more in depth hiking guide but if you are only planning to stop and do a few hikes here and there, this guide will serve you just fine.The road can be driven in two days but this won't allow you to do much stopping and you will want to stop, not just at overlooks and visitor's centers but also various places described in the book such as Mawbry Mill, Grandfather Mountain, Sally Mae's general store, and many other places along the route that will catch your interest. Also, as you drive along the parkway, whenever you pass by a nearby city or town off of the parkway where there are notable sights to see, the guide will tell you which exit to use to leave the parkway, give you directions to the town, and describe some of the things to do, hotels and restaurants that can be found there.The final section is titled "Essentials" and gives you information about travel, parking, finding fuel, and more. The last pages of the guide contain a fairly extensive Index which makes it very easy to find exactly the pages you are looking for.
